Abstract: U.S. schools are becoming more diverse and segregated. This paper attempts to highlight the practices and outcomes associated with culturally competent education for diverse student populations. Compiling first hand accounts and other data through a mixed-methods design, this study uses a theoretical framework based on previous critical pedagogy and culturally responsive pedagogy scholarship to classify and describe the curricular and instructional practices of intentionally diverse schools. Initial quantitative analysis suggests some improved academic outcomes for students attending intentionally diverse charter schools. Quantitative analysis highlights the various practices and strategies employed by intentionally diverse charter schools to educate a heterogenous student population. Such practices include procedures to ensure diverse representation in curriculum as well as approaches to teaching about bias and identity.
