| Abstract: |
Early literacy and language development are critical in children’s reading development upon formal schooling. Our study utilizes a longitudinal dataset to investigate relations between families’ home literacy environments and children’s early reading development with respect to their differing home language backgrounds. Our primary goal was to understand how family factors contribute to language minority children’s reading achievement growth their early elementary years (K-4) vis-à-vis their English-monolingual peers. To examine family literacy practices over time we define a latent variable growth model to discern whether changes in reported home literacy practices affect children’s reading development from kindergarten through fourth grade. We tapped into home literacy using survey items measured from parent interviews across three periods corresponding with students’ reading assessments.
