Abstract: As an important component of second language (L2) acquisition, vocabulary learning has been significantly impacted by the emergence of new technologies. In order to evaluate the efficacy of such technologies—as well as to identify current trends and to suggest future research and development directions—periodic meta-analyses of studies in technology-assisted vocabulary learning are needed. This meta-analysis showed that technology-assisted L2 vocabulary learning was more beneficial than non-technology-assisted instruction and highlighted several variables (game condition, device, setting, test format, reported reliability) affecting the effectiveness of vocabulary learning. These variables should be considered when planning instruction in technology-assisted L2 vocabulary learning; other implications are discussed.
