Abstract: Two of the most controversial areas of education reform are school policies regarding homework and grading. This study investigated variation in the views of different stakeholder groups on these issues. A survey with common items related to homework and grading policies was administered to all parents, teachers, principals, and district leaders in a medium-size, Midwest school district prior to exploration and implementation of policy change initiatives. Results showed statistically significant differences in these stakeholders’ views regarding the purpose of homework, parents’ role in homework, the purpose of grades, and meaning of grades. Differences also varied depending on the grade level of students involved. The nature of these differences is discussed along with implications for policy implementation.
