Please consider these substantive off-site sessions as alternative opportunities as you plan your schedule for the Meeting. Space is limited for these visits, and interested attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Registered participants wishing to add courses, off-site visits, or tours can log in to add events to your registration. Off-site visits are listed below in day and time order.

GSC Community Service Project: Philadelphia Urban Creators, a Youth-Led Organization Bringing Equitable and Sustainable Solutions to North Philadelphia Neighborhoods

This year we will partner with Philadelphia Urban Creators (PUC), a grassroots youth organization using an innovative model of social change to create healthy and sustainable environments within the urban landscapes where they reside. Winners of Mobilize.org’s 2013 reGenerate Philly Summit Awards, PUC currently runs a variety of initiatives focused on urban innovation in North Central Philadelphia, including a fully-operating urban farm. Their group seeks to unite, educate, energize, and empower Philadelphia youth to become passionate leaders in the movement to transform blighted urban landscapes into models of community-based sustainability through community organizing, service-learning, artistic expression, and urban agriculture. Following an orientation and tour, we will work outdoors alongside members of PUC to help support their mission.

Comparing Private Sector Technical Training with Public Sector Degree Completion: An Off-Site Panel Discussion with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on Academia-Industry Partnerships for Workforce Education

Philadelphia offers a unique opportunity to explore the workplace learning practices that supported reintroduction of the shipping industry to the region as well the workforce education programs of one of the twelve regional offices of the Federal Reserve System in the United States. The panel will discuss how both the shipping and banking industries have partnered with local community colleges and universities in Philadelphia to prepare their workforce for a work environment that is vastly different from that of even five years ago. The discussion will compare and contrast the challenges of academia-industry partnerships experienced by Aker Philadelphia Shipyard to create a future workforce of skilled craftsmen and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia to prepare their future knowledge workers.

Out in the Community: Conversations with Students, Educators and School Leaders in Philadelphia

Transportation: Attendees who have registered to attend this Division K event (plus reception) at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University can meet at the 12th Street bus lane, which is located on 12th Street between Arch and Race Streets. Continuous bus service to the Academy of Natural Sciences will be provided between 2:45pm - 3:20pm.

This off-site session offers Division K members an opportunity to look at schooling, reform and innovation through the eyes and experiences of school leaders and educators on the ground in Philadelphia. We are so pleased that Superintendent William Hite has graciously agreed to join us; we look forward to learning about his work and his vision for the Philadelphia schools.

Another highlight of this session will be student literary performances, as well as the opportunity to explore the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere. A reception will follow the program. 

Visit to the Woodbury City Public School District: A School District That Works to Provide Each Child With a Top-Quality College Preparatory Education

Transportation: Transportation is not provided. Attendees can use public transportation to get to South Philadelphia High School, options are listed below:

  • Take the #23 bus from 12th and Arch Streets (heading south, towards Broad-Oregon), to 12th and Jackson Streets, walk two blocks east (towards Broad Street) to reach the school. 
  • Take the Broad Street Subway line to the Snyder Station and walk one block south to reach the school. 

Either trip will take approximately 20-30 minutes from the Pennsylvania Convention Center

Description: In this off-site visit, conference participants will have the chance to dialogue with youth and community organizers about their campaign to attain adequate funding and preserve public control over the majority of the city's schools. The event aims to engage several key groups in a discussion with educational researchers to explore the goals and strategies of these organizers, as well as to consider how educational researchers can support the work that such stakeholder groups are doing to win the fight for educational equity.
