2024 AERA Arts & Learning SIG
Distinguished Dissertation Award Call
The Arts and Learning SIG Awards Committee invites entries for the annual
Distinguished Dissertation Award. Papers based on the author’s recently
completed dissertation will be considered. The award will be presented at a
business meeting of the Arts & Learning SIG at the Annual Meeting of AERA.
CRITERIA
The award will be presented annually to the scholar whose work is of importance to
Arts & Learning SIG members, and in the opinion of the A&L Awards Committee,
bears the hallmarks of integrity, quality, depth of knowledge, style and significance
to the field.
ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to all recent doctoral degree recipients whose dissertations
were accepted during the 3 years prior to the AERA Annual Meeting at which the
award will be presented (i.e., dissertation completed 2021 through 2023 for the
2024 award). Membership in AERA and the SIG is not required to be nominated or
to be a recipient of an award.
SUBMISSION PROCESS
The following items should be submitted to the Awards Chair:
A 1,000-1,250 word extended abstract of the dissertation that clearly addresses the
Objectives, Perspectives/Theoretical Framework, Methods/Modes of Inquiry,
Results, and Scholarly significance of the study. (Note that these are the same
requirements necessary for an AERA paper submission).
The author’s name and affiliation should appear on a separate cover page, and only
on this page, to ensure anonymity in the review process, along with their mailing
address, their phone number and their e-mail.
Finalists will be asked to submit an anonymized manuscript of the complete
dissertation.
E-mail the documents to Brittany Harker Martin , AERA Arts and Learning SIG
Awards Chair: bhmartin@ucalgary.ca
Manuscripts are accepted for consideration with the understanding that they are
original material.
REVIEW PROCESS
The award committee will consist of three members of the Arts & Learning SIG,
selected by the Awards Chair. The committee will review all materials submitted
for round 1 review and identify the strongest 2-3 submissions to move on to the
second round of review (full dissertations). The committee will review these in full
and then determine if an award should be given and, if so, to which candidate(s).
