Opening Plenary Keynote—Cornel West
6:30 – 8:30 pm
Hyatt Regency Chicago, East Tower – Ballroom Level – Grand Ballroom (CD North/South, E & F)

Preeminent scholar and public intellectual Cornel West (Union Theological Seminary) will deliver the opening keynote lecture at the Annual Meeting in Chicago. West’s lecture will be immediately followed by a conversation with AERA President Rich Milner (Vanderbilt University), and moderated Q&A with audience members. The session will begin with a land acknowledgement and a performance by the Oka Homma Native American drum group, followed by the Muntu Dance Company, a Chicago-based organization of educators who perform interpretations of African and African American dance, music, and folklore. This session will be livestreamed on the Annual Meeting online platform and mobile app.

Wallace Foundation Distinguished Lecture—Linda C. Tillman

Linda C. Tillman (Loyola Marymount University) will deliver the Wallace Lecture “The Leadership They Serve: Effective Black Principal Leadership for Black Students in Public Schools.” Drawing on relevant research and the mission of the Wallace Foundation, this lecture will focus on the importance of and the imperative for effective principal preparation programs and principal leadership for Black students in public schools. 2022 Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award Lecture—William H. Schmidt

William H. Schmidt’s (Michigan State University) lecture, “Inequality in U.S. Mathematics Education: The Roles Race and Socioeconomic Status Play,” will examine the question: what relationship do race and SES each have directly on student performances well as on the various components of schooling at both the system level and the classroom level? Consequential Research on Learning and Development: Diverse Pathways for Learning and Integration Across Domains of Development

While attention to biological processes has historically been used to warrant systems of oppression, this evolving expansive conception of human learning and development is rooted in very different principles—namely that because human malleability and diversity of pathways of development are rooted in our evolution as a species, we ignore such malleability and diversity at our peril. To address powerful truths of human possibilities, there needs to be a science of human learning and development that does not ignore diversity, but embraces it and theorizes it. The Truth About the Overwhelming Presence of Whiteness 20 Years Later: Today’s Interrogations of Race, Racism, and White supremacy in Teacher Education

This presidential session raises up Dr. Christine Sleeter’s work in teacher education by revisiting her postulation twenty years ago to highlight how whiteness continues to manifest in teacher education whilst also providing concrete strategies of how teacher education fights back. What is (In)Effective About the Concept of “Effective” Teaching and (How) Should it Be Replaced? A Discussion

This session will feature a conversation among a group of scholars with different areas of expertise who have confronted different issues about the construct and methods associated with “effective” teaching. Their discussion will trace the histories of this concept of "effective teaching," as well as different conceptions of "good teaching," and consider how it interacts with approaches to teaching that have purposefully diverged from normative practice—that are culturally resonant and sustaining, and deeply embedded in the values of non-dominant communities. This session will be livestreamed on the Annual Meeting online platform and mobile app.

AERA Hip-Hop 50

Developed and hosted in partnership with the Hip-Hop Theories, Praxis & Pedagogies SIG, AERA joins in honoring and acknowledging the 50th anniversary of hip-hop culture with the exhibit “AERA Hip Hop 50.” The exhibit will chronicle the history of hip-hop culture and its growth and contributions to the field of education. A series of lightning talks focused on the topic will also be featured. The exhibit and lightning talks will be held throughout the Annual Meeting in the Exhibit Hall, located in the Hyatt Regency Chicago, Riverside Exhibit Hall.

Graduate Student Research-in-Progress Roundtable Series

The Graduate Student Research-in-Progress Roundtable Series is being test-piloted as a special component of the Annual Meeting that will give accepted graduate students the opportunity to share and discuss their work in progress on site in Chicago. The roundtables will be held every day of the meeting from 2:50 pm to 4:20 pm in the Hyatt Regency Chicago, Grand Ballroom A.

Black and Brown Marketplace

The 2023 Annual Meeting will feature a marketplace of Chicago-based Black- and Brown-owned businesses in the Hyatt Regency, Riverside Exhibit Hall. The Marketplace aims to celebrate the diversity of Chicago and its people, as well as enrich the conference experience and provide a deeper understanding of the community. The Marketplace will be open 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Friday, April 14, through Sunday, April 16.
