November 2022

Arnetha F. Ball and Linda C. Tillman

AERA has announced that renowned scholars Arnetha F. Ball and Linda C. Tillman will deliver the Distinguished Lectures at the 2023 Annual Meeting, to be held April 13–16 in Chicago and May 4–5 on the online platform. The AERA annual meeting is the largest gathering of scholars in the education research field and is a showcase for groundbreaking, innovative work in a diverse array of subject areas. Both lectures will be given on site at the annual meeting in Chicago and a recording will be made available on the virtual platform.

Ball, Professor Emerita in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University, will present the AERA Distinguished Lecture. She currently serves as the director of Stanford’s Race, Inequality, and Language in Education Program and is co-director of its Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Language. She served as AERA’s President from 2011 to 2012 and is an AERA Fellow. Ball is also the winner of the 2009 AERA Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award. She is one of the nation’s leading scholars conducting research on educational linguistics, urban education, and teacher preparation to work with poor, underachieving, and historically marginalized students in transnational contexts.

Tillman, Professor Emerita of Educational Leadership in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, will deliver the AERA Wallace Foundation Distinguished Lecture. She is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Loyola Marymount University and a former public-school educator. Her research and scholarship are focused on school leadership, the education of African Americans in K–12, mentoring in higher education, and culturally sensitive research approaches.

Additional information on these lectures and other noteworthy sessions will be announced in December. This meeting’s theme is “Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth.”
