July 2019

On July 23, the House passed H.R. 36, the Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act, by a voice vote. The bipartisan bill takes important steps in supporting research and data collection to address the causes and consequences of sexual and gender harassment in STEM. The legislation also incorporates many of the recommendations included in the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequences in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. AERA is an endorser of the legislation and its companion bill in the Senate.

“We are thrilled to see the House advance this important, bipartisan legislation to address sexual harassment in the sciences,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “We look forward to the Senate taking action on this legislation in advancing concrete, action-oriented steps that can support safe and inclusive research environments.”
