AERA Open Named Best New Journal in Social Sciences by the Association of American Publishers

Washington, D.C., February 7, 2019AERA Open was just named the “Best New Journal in Social Sciences” by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) for the 2019 Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE Awards). The awards, announced on January 29, honored scholarly works published in 2018, including books, journals, and digital products that demonstrated exceptional scholarship and made a significant contribution to a field of study.

AERA Open, a peer-reviewed open-access journal published by the American Educational Research Association, was recognized as the “Best New Journal in Social Sciences” under the reference works category. Winners were chosen from 165 finalists previously identified from more than 500 entries in the 2019 PROSE Awards competition.

AERA Open was created as AERA’s first fully open access journal and was among the first open access journals in the social sciences published by a research association,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “AERA is deeply honored to receive this award and thanks AAP and the PROSE Awards for formally recognizing the contributions AERA Open has made to the worldwide education research community.”

AERA Open aims to advance knowledge related to education and learning, cumulatively and incrementally. It also aims to serve as a venue for innovation, novel inquiry, interdisciplinary bridge building, and research that fosters connections between research and practice. The current editors of AERA Open are Mark Warschauer, Greg J. Duncan, and Nancy E. Hill. Jacquelynne S. Eccles, along with Warschauer and Duncan, were the journal’s inaugural editors.

“We are most fortunate to have a team of editors who are not only extraordinary scholars but also committed to open access,” said Levine. “This journal is at the leading edge of working with AERA in advancing open knowledge. We are equally fortunate that SAGE Publishing issues AERA journals on our behalf and shares our commitment to accessible scholarship of the highest quality.”
