July 2017

On May 1 in San Antonio, Texas, the American Educational Research Association, in cooperation with the World Education Research Association (WERA), held the second meeting of the Education Research Associations in the Americas. This meeting convened 12 associations to continue strengthening ties across education research communities in the Americas. The first meeting was held in September 2016 in Washington, D.C.

This second meeting took place at the conclusion of the 2017 AERA Annual Meeting. Representatives focused on pathways to further increase collaboration among associations and research organizations in the Americas and the Caribbean. The agenda included a review of the 11 Americas-related symposia held at the AERA Annual Meeting.

These Annual Meeting sessions, developed by representatives attending the September 2016 meeting in Washington, involved a wide-ranging set of research topics, and all included research from more than one Americas country. The research addressed such issues as migration and mobility, the role of education research journals, democratization and inclusion in higher education, and the theory and practice of education policy analysis in the Americas.

Following the discussion of the sessions, the meeting participants considered new ways to build upon the collaborative momentum to continue strengthening a research network in the Americas. The participants agreed to be a visible presence at each other’s meetings, including upcoming meetings in Chile, Brazil, and Mexico, while also working together on plans to convene at the 2018 AERA Annual Meeting in New York City.

Progress was made on a number of fronts, including reaching out to early career scholars, identifying potential sources of support for convening, and explicitly including North America as part of holding meetings outside the United States. As with the September 2016 meeting, this event was simultaneously translated in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

At the conclusion of the meeting, participants unanimously adopted the following resolution:

“On the 1st day of May 2017, at a meeting in San Antonio, Texas, in the United States, 19 representatives of 12 associations and related research organizations (a) reaffirmed their shared commitment to continue to work together across the Americas, and (b) emphasized the importance of continuing to advance education research and address the research challenges and opportunities of significance in the Americas and of relevance worldwide.”
