From Classrooms to Outer Space via Public Policies: Renowned Intellectuals and Leaders Articulate Opportunities and Challenges
Select demographic groups—racial minorities, women, and religious minorities—are consistently underrepresented in the STEM professions in both the U.S. and England. Chaired by Beverly Lindsay (University College London), presenters—James Gates (University of Maryland), Shirley Malcolm (American Association for the Advancement of Science), and Michael Jonathan Reiss (Institute of Education - London)—will explore modes to increase representation and will present aspects of their work on education and science research and public policy.

Chaired by George W. Bohrnstedt (American Institutes for Research), speaker Peggy G. Carr (NCES) and discussants William H. Schmidt (Michigan State University) and Jane Hannaway (American Institutes for Research) will focus their discussion on the current state of the National Center for Education Statistics, addressing the center’s priorities, opportunities, and challenges.
Perspectives on Replication in Education Research

Chaired by Rebecca A. Maynard (University of Pennsylvania), participants—Matthew C. Makel (Duke University), Jonathan A. Plucker (University of Connecticut), Therese D. Pigott (Loyola University Chicago), and Greg Duncan (University of California, Irvine)—will address challenges facing replication in education research and discuss steps for increasing the number of replication studies, for the benefit of the field, practitioners, and policymakers.
Closing the Information Gap: Best Strategies for Connecting Education Research to Policy Makers and the Public

Chaired by Camilla P. Benbow (Vanderbilt University), this session will bring together three sets of stakeholders—those who produce education research, those who use it, and those who know how to communicate about it—to discuss mutual challenges in raising the visibility of education research. Participants—Sara Goldrick-Rab (University of Wisconsin—Madison), Claudio Sanchez (National Public Radio), and Former Rep. Brian Baird (U.S. Congress)—will explore strategies that maximize the usefulness, application, and communication of education research.
Advocacy for Federal Research Support: Making the Case
4:05 to 5:35 p.m.

As Congress faces budget caps and the threat of sequestration, the education research community must effectively advocate for federal funding for research. In this session chaired by AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine, participants—Wendy Naus (COSSA), Angela Sharpe (COSSA), Juliane Baron (AERA), and Former Rep. Brian Baird (U.S. Congress)—will provide the perspective of policymakers on making funding decisions with limited resources, update the audience on the current discussions on Capitol Hill surrounding funding for research, and offer ideas and strategies for researchers to join the dialogue.
