August 2014 

Hello Division H Members:

As per usual, there are many announcements and updates! 

I am pleased to report that all of the paper and session submissions, even those that were transferred to Division H because of the demise of the Large Scale Assessment SIG, have been assigned and are in the process of being reviewed.  We received 284 papers and 33 session submissions with the assessment section receiving the most submissions (103) and accountability receiving the least (47).  The breakdown and additional details regarding the submissions is provided as an attachment.  Nyambura Maina, 2015 Program Committee Chair has indicated that the reviews are moving slowly right now because the review deadline is about a week and a half from now. Nyambura has asked that I encourage you to complete your reviews on time...and I do encourage you to complete your reviews by the September 2, 2014 deadline...the day after Labor Day.

Please welcome Sharon Saez (CTB-McGraw-Hill) and Raymond Hart (Council of Great City Schools) as Assistant Chairs of the Affirmative Action and Membership Committees, respectively.  Ray has agreed to serve as Membership Chair beginning after the Chicago annual meeting when the two year term of co-chairs Whitney Wall Bortz and Marisa DelCampo ends.  The updated list of the Division H leadership team is posted on the AERA website.

Both the International Committee (Chaired by Kim Schildkamp - University of Twente in the Netherlands and with Burcu Kaniskan as Assistant Chair) and the Professional Development (PD) Committee (Chaired by Rolf Blank) are working on professional development webinars for Division H and other interested AERA members.  Rolf and the PD Committee also submitted a professional development proposal to AERA for presentation as a pre-session in Chicago featuring the Wake County Schools.  The PD Committee has also drafted a professional development proposal for Division H which includes webinars and a workshop along with requested funding to support the work.  Their proposal will be reviewed shortly by the Division H leadership team.  Stay tune for additional details.

The 2014 edition of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing is now on sale. The Testing Standards are a product of the American Educational Research Association, the American Psychological Association (APA), and the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME). Published collaboratively by the three organizations since 1966, it represents the gold standard in guidance on testing in the United States and in many other countries. An e-version of the Testing Standards will be available for purchase in fall 2014.  AERA Members - $49.95 + shipping.

NEWS FROM SECRETARY DUNCAN ON STUDENT TESTING

On Thursday, August 21st, U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan engaged in a conversation with teachers and other front-line educators regarding his concerns

around student testing, along with the next steps for our Department in this very important arena.  Further, the Secretary posted a blog that details where the Department stands on this issue.

Division H is now accepting proposals for its 2nd Annual Invited Graduate Student Poster Session! After the great success of its inaugural year, we will continue to follow this new format. Please note that we cannot consider papers for this invited session that have been submitted to the general AERA submissions process which uses the All Academic system on the AERA website. All students who participate in the Graduate Student Session Poster session will receive feedback on their proposal and a certificate of participation will be presented at the AERA Conference in Chicago. Division H graduate student members are eligible for a $50 stipend for participation. To be considered for this poster session, you must meet the criteria and follow the guidelines specified in the call for posters (http://bit.ly/DivH2015GradPosters), and send the information requested by email to DivisionH.GraduateStudents@gmail.com.

Student Registration - A new class of registration is now available for doctoral students who wish to attend AEPC ($100 total). This option will be limited to the first 20 paid registrants, and attendees will be asked to serve in formal roles throughout the event (administration, note taking during strands, multimedia support, etc.). Students who wish to attend but not provide service are welcome—and encouraged—to do so at the $370 fee.

Reduced Rate Accommodations - Division 15 has negotiated for a reduced room rate of $99/night. About AEPC - Using a small-group model, conferees will come together to engage in direct dialogue about some of the central concerns that both bind and divide us as Educational Psychologists. We are asking participants to come ready to discuss and debate important concepts, procedures, and theoretical tensions in the topical strand of their choice. Session facilitators are charged with hosting small group conversations with the goal of improving synergy among scholars who may not otherwise have an opportunity to directly interact. When strong synergies are already grounded in evidence, it will be possible to strengthen the messages in our journals, newsletters, and social media sites. New directions are also likely to emerge at this event—directions that will require scholars to form new design teams, seek funding, and conduct new research.

28TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS AND IMPROVEMENT-LAST CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Dear Colleague:  We want to make sure you’re aware of an extended opportunity to submit proposals for the 28th Annual Conference of the International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement.  This is only the 4th time in 28 years that the meeting will be held in the United States…a most unusual opportunity to hear and meet with practitioners, researchers and policy-makers from around the United States and the globe. We already have proposals and registrations from California to Massachusetts, Chile to Canada, England to Nepal, plus 30 other countries and many more states.

Due to popular demand as well as the demands of summer holidays and back to school commitments, the Organizing Committee has extended the Proposal Submission period through August 31.  The Call for Proposals is at www.icsei.net/conference2015 or contact us at ICSEI2015@uc.edu.

To be held in Cincinnati, Ohio, January 3-6, 2015, this 28th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement features the opening keynote by Andreas Schleicher, Deputy Director, Directorate for Education, OECD, who will address the most recent PISA studies.

Dr. Vivian Tseng of the W.T. Grant Foundation will lead a session examining efforts to scale up reforms from idea to several schools, from several schools to dozens, and from substantial numbers of schools to hundreds or thousands of schools. In a series of related sessions, we will include Multi-year Results from Ideas in Innovation (I3) Grants. These sessions will include presentations by developers of reforms that have been awarded $30-$50 million dollars from the U.S. Department of Education.   Efforts at scaling up Cooperative Learning, Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP), Success for All, Teach for America and other programs will be presented alongside 4th year external evaluations of the programs' effects.

Dr. Tom Good, University of Arizona, and Dr. Daniel Muijs, University of Southampton, will discuss what we and practitioners need to know about Teacher Effects.

Dr. Robert Marzano, cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research Laboratory will present results from his meta-analyses of school- and system-level educational effects, driving toward his call for High Reliability Organization (HRO) structures in educational reform.

Dr. Dan Duke, Professor of Leadership, Foundations and Policy in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, will present his research and related work on the critical imperative of Turning Around Low Performing Schools.

Following each Keynote, you will have the option to attend break-out session to build upon and further explore the ideas presented, led by US and World scholars.

CSU TO HOST AND AN IES GRANT WRITING SEMINAR

Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia, will host an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Grant Writing Seminar on Friday, October 17, 2014.  At the session, the participants will sit in groups and interact with fellow colleagues in order to get peer input during the session.  The groups will be able to submit various examples to Dr. Meredith Lawson, Education Research Analyst IES, who will lead the seminar.  This interactive format will allow for immediate feedback from Dr. Lawson.  Her presentation will focus on writing an IES research grant proposal, including the abstract, common pitfalls, and the major sections of the proposal.  After the interactive presentation, lunch will be provided.  Following lunch, there will be break-out sessions with IES Grantees from the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, and Florida State University.  At these sessions, the IES Grantees will discuss your IES grant proposals and offer possible suggestions for future submissions.  Handouts will be provided.  All faculty, staff, and graduate students are encouraged to attend.  For more information, contact Jennifer Brown (brown_jennifer2@columbusstate.edu) or check out the information website, te.columbusstate.edu/grantwriting.

AERA GRANTS PROGRAM

Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the AERA Grants Program is currently accepting proposals for Dissertation and Research Grants, with a deadline of Thursday, September 4, 2014. Now in its 23rd year, the AERA Grants Program, with support from the National Science Foundation, provides small grants for conducting studies of education policy and practice using federally-funded, large-scale data sets. Applications are encouraged from a variety of disciplines, such as but not limited to, education, sociology, economics, psychology, demography, statistics, and psychometrics.

AERA Dissertation Grants. AERA provides dissertation support for advanced doctoral students to undertake doctoral dissertations using data from the large-scale national or international data sets supported by the NCES, NSF, and/or other federal agencies. The selection process is competitive. AERA Dissertation Grants are awarded for one-year for an amount of up to $20,000. The next application deadline is Thursday, September 4, 2014.

AERA Research Grants. AERA provides small grants for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and other doctoral-level scholars to undertake quantitative research using data from the large-scale national or international data sets supported by the NCES, NSF, and/or other federal agencies. The selection process is competitive. AERA Research Grants are awarded for one or two years, for an amount of up to $35,000. The next application deadline is Thursday, September 4, 2014.

The Department of Education Studies (EDST) at the University of Oregon, College of Education is seeking to fill an open rank position, with a preference for an Advanced Assistant or Early Associate professor, in Educational Psychology.

Candidates for this position must have expertise in contemporary educational psychology research and the learning sciences.  Strong preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas: motivation & management; learning, teaching, & assessment; creativity in the classroom; evaluation & assessment.  Candidates with a track record for promoting equity and inclusion for multicultural and multilingual students, women, and other traditionally underserved populations of students are particularly encouraged to apply.  This faculty member will be expected to teach courses related to the psychological foundations of education, the learning and motivation sciences, and learning, teaching, & assessment in the undergraduate as well as graduate programs in EDST.  Candidates must have an active research agenda, a strong publication record (commensurate with years in rank), and a track record or evidence of potential to secure external funding.  Preference will be given to individuals who have experience with culturally and linguistically diverse populations and to those with K-12 teaching and research experience.  We are especially interested in candidates with a strong commitment to pre-service and in-service teacher education.

Establish an independent research program leading to publications.

Contribute to department, college, and university governance.

Required Qualifications:

Earned doctorate in educational psychology or a related field;

Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in educational psychology and the learning sciences (e.g., learning and instructional theory, motivational theory, classroom assessment design-based research, and socio-cultural psychology);

Evidence of successful teaching experience at the K-12 level;

Evidence of teaching effectiveness (K-12 and university);

Evidence of working with culturally, linguistically, and socially diverse student (K-12 and higher education) populations;

Evidence of preparing pre-service teachers;

Evidence of ability to conduct research leading to peer reviewed publication;

Evidence of ability to work with students and faculty in a variety of disciplines; and

Evidence of strong writing and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of a sustained and central scholarly focus on equity in education for traditionally underrepresented groups, students of color, indigenous or First Nation communities, or linguistic minority students.

Expertise in the use of educational technology in the delivery of K-12 and University curriculum.

Expertise in preparing teachers to serve linguistically, socially, and culturally diverse students.

Experience in or potential for writing, directing, or participating in externally funded projects.

Salary:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
