New Revision of Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing Just Released
New Edition Addresses Important Changes in Federal Law and Major Measurement Trends
WASHINGTON, D.C., August 18, 2014 – The new revision of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing has just been released jointly by the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME). The Testing Standards is the gold standard in guidance on the development and use of educational and psychological testing in the United States and many other countries.
The new edition of the Testing Standards, which was last revised in 1999, addresses important developments in federal law and measurement trends affecting validity, testing of individuals with disabilities or different linguistic backgrounds, new types of tests, and new uses of existing tests.
Five general areas, in particular, receive attention in the 2014 revision:
- Examining the accountability issues for the uses of tests in educational policy
- Broadening the concept of accessibility of tests for all examinees
- Representing more comprehensively the role of tests in the workplace
- Taking into account the expanding role of technology in testing
- Improving the structure of the book for better communication of the standards
The Testing Standards is written for the professional and for the educated layperson and addresses professional and technical issues of test development and use in education, psychology, and employment. The book is an important reference for professional test developers, sponsors, publishers, users, policymakers, employers, and students in education and psychology.
The Testing Standards has been endorsed by AERA, APA, and NCME as representing best practice for their members.
The three associations jointly hold the copyright to the Testing Standards. Revenue from the sale of the book produces a development fund to ensure that adequate resources will be available for future revisions.
