AERA member Young-Suk Kim, an associate professor of reading and language arts in the School of Teacher Education at Florida State University, was announced in December as a Presidential Early Career Scientist. The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

The White House noted that the awards symbolize the high priority of producing outstanding scientists and engineers to advance the nation’s goals, tackle grand challenges, and contribute to the American economy. The award was established by President Clinton in 1996 to recognize individuals for their pursuit of innovative research and their commitment to community service.

Kim was chosen as a Presidential Early Career Scientist for her research in language and literacy development. She is one of only two recipients nominated by the U.S. Department of Education.
