Live-Streamed Sessions at a Glance

For the second consecutive year, AERA is live-streaming selected Annual Meeting sessions at no cost for attendees who want to watch two simultaneous sessions, or for people who are unable to attend. This year, 20 Presidential and featured sessions will be live-streamed. Free registration is required to watch any of the sessions.

Registration for live-streamed sessions will be available in the coming days. AERA President Barbara Schneider to Address College Mismatching Trend

Every year more than 150,000 low-income and minority on-time high school graduates choose to enroll in postsecondary institutions that are less selective than their grades, test scores, and aspirations predict. These choices have long-term consequences for the lives of the students’ and their future earnings—and on the contributions they could make to our society.  

In her presidential address, Barbara Schneider will address the college “mismatching” trend, highlighting results from the College Ambition Program, a whole-high school quasi-experimental intervention designed to assist students in fulfilling their ambitions. After four years in the field, working with other 3,000 students, results demonstrate that there are concrete strategies that change college plans and enrollment, with potential for scale-up at a national level. 

A champagne reception will follow the presidential address.

Political and Policy Leaders Headline Sessions

Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.), former Pennsylvania Governor and Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell, key federal science and research officials, and Philadelphia School District Superintendent William Hite will focus on emerging topics in – and the intersection between – education research and school, education, and science policy.

Rep. Fattah, ranking Democrat on the House science appropriations subcommittee, will address “Congress and Connecting Research to STEM Education and Innovation.” Rendell will discuss “The Political Realities of Education Reform: What Is the Role for Educational Research,” while Hite will offer his unique perspective on “The Landscape of Education Reform in Philadelphia.”

Key policy officials at U.S. federal agencies will speak on the current state of education research policies and priorities. John Q. Easton, director of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), will address “IES: Promises and Challenges.” Joan Ferrini-Mundy, assistant director at the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Directorate for Education and Human Resources, will discuss “Promoting Innovation and Building Research Foundations.” Libby Doggett, deputy assistant secretary for policy and early learning at the U.S. Department of Education, will discuss the implications of research on universal preschool for practice and policy.

60 Years Since Brown: A Spotlight on Brown and Civil Rights

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. To commemorate these landmark moments and the contributions of education research to educational equality and justice — while examining what else should, and must, be done – a special series of Annual Meeting sessions will focus on  Brown and civil rights. Leading scholars Charles M. Payne, James D. Anderson, Kenji Hakuta, and Marta Tienda will participate in a symposium and discussion forum, while six other sessions explore aspects of what has – and hasn’t – been accomplished in the past 60 years, and how education research can advance and foster equality for students and society.

Honoring 2014 Award Winners in Educational Research

AERA invites Annual Meeting participants attending both in person and virtually to join in honoring this year’s 2014 Award Winners in Education Research. During the ceremony, each awardee will be announced officially and have their contributions to the field recognized and honored. They will also give a brief acceptance speech. The luncheon ceremony will be held on the third day of the Annual Meeting – Saturday, April 5 (12:25 to 2:25 pm) in the Convention Center Terrace Level – Terrace I.
