This month, AERA releases the 2013 volume of Review of Research in Education (RRE), coedited by Christian Faltis and Jamal Abedi. The volume, entitled “Extraordinary Pedagogies for Working Within School Settings Serving Nondominant Students,” includes ten informative chapters covering a broad array of sociocultural issues.  

As the editors note in their introduction, “extraordinary pedagogies are not only possible but also necessary to interrupt and challenge the current educational establishment that has attempted to refocus attention on learning outcomes, without taking into account the larger issues of race, class, poverty, and language.”

A session at the 2013 AERA Annual Meeting will examine the new volume and will feature comments by the editors. The session will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2:15 p.m.–3:45 p.m.

About the Editors

Christian Faltis is currently the Dolly and David Fiddyment Chair in Teacher Education, Director of Teacher Education, and Professor of Language, Literacy and Culture in the School of Education at the University of California, Davis.  His research interests are bilingual learning in academic contexts, immigrant education, and critical arts-based learning. 

Jamal Abedi is a Professor of Education at the University of California, Davis. His research interests include studies in the areas of psychometrics and test and scale developments. 

About RRE

RRE is available to both members and nonmembers of AERA. Members who have chosen RRE as their benefit subscription will automatically receive the new volume in print, and members who did not choose RRE when they renewed their membership may do so now. All subscribers can access the new volume online, and nonmembers may subscribe to RRE or purchase a single copy through Sage Publications.

RRE provides an annual overview and descriptive analysis of selected topics of relevant research literature through critical and synthesizing essays. The journal promotes discussion and controversy about research problems, in addition to pulling together and summarizing the work in a field. The RRE 2014 editors are Terrance Wiley, Kathryn Borman, Arnold Danzig, and David R. Garcia; the volume’s topic will be “Language Diversity, Policy, and Politics in Education.”
