IES Releases Draft Scientific Integrity Policy

IES Releases Draft Scientific Integrity Policy

April 2012

On March 30, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) issued a draft of the Department of Education’s Scientific Integrity Policy for public comment. The document is intended to build standards for the integrity of scientific research conducted by employees and contractors of the Department of Education.

The release of the draft policy is part of an ongoing effort by the Obama administration to ensure that federal agencies protect the integrity of federal scientific research. In 2009, President Barack Obama issued a memorandum to the heads of all federal agencies to develop policies based upon six principles of integrity. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued further guidance on these principles in December 2010.

Public comments on the draft are due on May 15 and may be emailed to ScientificIntegrity@ed.gov.
