Editors Selected for AERA’s Handbook of Research on Teaching
WASHINGTON, D.C., August 9, 2010—The American Educational Research Association (AERA) has announced plans to publish a new edition of its signature volume, Handbook of Research on Teaching, and named two ETS scholars—Drew H. Gitomer and Courtney A. Bell—as co-editors. AERA anticipates that this fifth edition will appear in 2014, providing analytic understanding of the state of knowledge and inform future directions of education research.

Impact of Information Technology on Workers’ Prosperity: Research Reveals Mixed Results
WASHINGTON, June 24, 2010—Recent research results published in “The Economic Effect of Education in an Information Technology-Penetrating Economy: Evidence From Hong Kong” reflect the impact of education on economic well being in a technological society. The study, conducted by Chi Wai Chan, Open University of Hong Kong, appears in the June/July issue of Educational Researcher, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Educational Research Association.

Educational Researcher Devotes May Issue to “Report of the National Early Literacy Panel”
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 31, 2010—The May 2010 issue of Educational Researcher (ER) provides a significant scholarly review of Developing Early Literacy: Report of the National Early Literacy Panel (NELP).  Educational Researcher is one of six journals published by the American Educational Research Association. In the special issue, NELP Panel members Timothy Shanahan and Christopher J. Lonigan provide a summary of the report followed by nine peer-reviewed commentaries written by  literacy scholars who examine the report and offer suggestions for where it illuminates issues and where it is lacking or ambiguous. The commentaries are followed by two responses, written by Shanahan, Lonigan, and Christopher Schatschneider.

AERA Will Not Site Meetings in Arizona Given New Immigration Law 
DENVER, Colorado, April 30, 2010--The governing Council of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) adopted the following resolution:

Whereas Arizona State Law S.B. 1070 is so broad in its reach and enforcement powers that it can have an adverse impact on the freedom to travel or assemble without encroachment.

Be it resolved that American Educational Research Association (AERA) has determined that it will no longer hold meetings or conferences in the state of Arizona until such time as this law is rescinded or AERA otherwise revisits the issue.

Stanford Scholar Selected to Present AERA Brown Lecture in Education Research
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 29, 2010—The American Educational Research Association (AERA) announces the selection of Kenji Hakuta, a Stanford University scholar who strives to improve education opportunities for language minority students, to deliver the 7th Annual Brown Lecture in Education Research this fall in Washington. Many of the popular policy solutions that have been introduced in response to concerns about the safety of children, such as zero tolerance and increased security measures, have been shown to be inadequate or even dysfunctional.  A new and more comprehensive policy perspective is needed, and there is abundant research evidence to point the way.
