Two special "Social Justice Awards" will be presented to outstanding individuals who are modelling the mission and mandate of the Paulo Freire SIG at an event entitled: “Freire’s Legacy: An Evening with Scholars, Community-Leaders and Youth” on Friday, April 26, 2013, in Oakland, CA prior to the AERA Annual Meeting.
Social Justice Award recipients – brief bios
Hodari B. Davis, is an African-American grassroots educator, activist, artist, leader, and scholar-activist, for over 20 years. Davis has taught youth and educators throughout California, and facilitated classes on topics such as: African-American History, Black Psychology, Urban Education, Ethnic Studies, Social Science, and Social Justice. He has been featured for his work on PBS Frontline: School Colors, a documentary about integration at Berkeley High School, Nightline, the Sunday Morning Show (KALX), the Wake Up Show, and Hardknock Radio. Currently, he is the National Program Director of Youth Speaks inc., and Executive Producer of Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival, co-founder and Executive Producer of Life is Living, and the co-creator of the Brave New Voices Pedagogy. Hodari will be receiving the Paulo Freire Social Justice Award, sponsored by Peter Lang Publishing.
Dr. Jeff Duncan-Andrade is Associate Professor of Raza Studies, Education Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies at San Francisco State University, and Director of Educational Equity at I-SEEED. Duncan-Andrade has dedicated his adult life to supporting and developing urban youth to help create sustainable urban communities. His two recent books, The Art of Urban Pedagogy (with Ernest Morrell) and What a Coach can Teach a Teacher (Peter Lang Publishing) have been met with critical acclaim. He has been teaching and coaching in the Oakland public schools for 18 years. Duncan-Andrade has lectured around the world about the elements of effective teaching in schools serving poor and working class children. He works closely with teachers, school site leaders, and school district officials nationally, and as far abroad as Brazil and New Zealand, to help develop classroom practices and school cultures that foster self-confidence, esteem, and academic success among all students. Jeff will be receiving the Paulo Freire Democratic Project award for Social Justice from Chapman University.
