Message from Co-Chair Dr. Sheron Fraser - Burgess

Greetings! I am honored to serve as co-chairperson along with Joyanne De Four-Babb!

Looking back on the last year, it is difficult to fully comprehend the scope of the pandemic’s global devastation. For CASE, the international losses were proximal, given that our members live in or study regions that struggled to combat the virus despite challenging health care infrastructure disparities. Amazingly CASE thrived in spaces made available through Zoom and the desire to cultivate and maintain community to foster hope and reaffirm the best of our humanity. A quick glance at the most recent 2021 SIG newsletter shows the extensive scope of CASE 2020-2021 engagement. Virtual events provided professional development and featured the range and rigor of members’ scholarship that showcased the vast academic talent residing in this SIG. Kudos to all of the members of the outgoing executive board!

So, as we embark on the 2021-2022 period, we have the privilege of building on the impressive precedent of previous accomplishments. AERA’s 2022 theme of “Cultivating Equitable Education Systems for the 21st Century” provides an opportunity to bring in mediating considerations for education of global systems of white dominant culture, the African Diaspora, nationalism, and human rights.  This focus involves continuing to be an amplifier and multiplier of educational research related to the Caribbean and the African continent and foregrounds the consciousness that the research is theorizing by its postcolonial and decolonial conceptual/theoretical frameworks. Along these lines, one goal is to increase, in the ranks of our SIG membership, scholars who work in the Caribbean region and on the African continent.

It is my belief that we are well-positioned as a SIG for philosophical, granular, and rigorous observations regarding global interpretations of educational equity that are embedded within this generative community.

I look forward to serving well!
