Message From the AERA President The 2017 Annual Meeting in San Antonio: A Timely Site for the Theme
As you know, July 22nd is the last day to submit papers or sessions for the 2017 Annual Meeting. The overall theme of the meeting is "Knowledge to Action: Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity." I hope that you will consider the unique opportunity that San Antonio and the Southwest afford to examine some of the most compelling issues related to this year’s theme and to your ongoing research. 

 
AERA Council Endorses Joint Statement on "Campus Carry" Legislation
Last month, the AERA Council endorsed the American Scholarly Societies Joint Statement on “Campus Carry” Legislation. The statement was developed in November 2015 when 29 scholarly societies joined in opposing legislation designed to facilitate the carrying of guns on college campuses.
 
Revised Member Gender Demographic Reporting to Go Into Effect in 2017
In May 2016, the Association sought additional input from members and other experts regarding the gender identification categories AERA uses to collect member demographic information. At that time there was an open call for information that yielded valuable and useful suggestions, but no consensus as to the optimal classification option for the Association to use in obtaining demographic information on gender.

AERA Journals Top International Education and Education Research Rankings 
The Review of Educational Research, Educational Researcher, and the American Educational Research Journal all ranked in the top ten for the 2015 Journal Citation Reports, just released in June.
 
2016 Annual Meeting Papers Now Available in Open-Access Online Repository 
More than 3,700 full-text papers presented at the 2016 AERA Annual Meeting were added to AERA’s open-access Online Paper Repository in June. This number represents over 40 percent of the papers presented at this year’s meeting. In total, nearly 25,000 papers from the past seven AERA annual meetings are available online.

President Obama Fills Three Positions on National Board for Education Sciences 
President Barack Obama announced the appointment of AERA past-president Jeannie Oakes, Presidential Professor Emeritus in Educational Equity at the University of California, Los Angeles, to serve on the National Board for Education Sciences on July 13.
 
House Education Appropriations Bill Includes Proposed Cuts to IES — AERA Presses for Restoration 
On July 14, the House Appropriations Committee passed the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education spending bill for the 2017 fiscal year. The legislation would cut funding for the Institute of Education Sciences by $82 million, or 13.3 percent, from $618 million to $536 million for FY 2017.
 
Senate Committee Passes NSF Reauthorization Bill
On June 29, the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee passed the American Innovation and Competitiveness Act of 2016, which reauthorizes the National Science Foundation. The bill passed on voice vote with only Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) voting against it.
