Education Policy and Civil Rights Expert Gary Orfield to Give
10th Annual Brown Lecture on October 24 in Washington, D.C.

WHAT:

The 10th Annual Brown Lecture in Education Research, organized by the American Educational Research Association.  The title of this year’s lecture is A New Civil Rights Agenda for American Education: Creating Opportunity in a Stratified Multiracial Nation.

The lectureship was inaugurated in 2004 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, in which the U.S. Supreme Court took into account scientific research in issuing its landmark ruling. Each year a distinguished scholar notable for producing significant research related to equality in education is invited to give a public lecture in Washington, D.C.

WHO:

Dr. Gary Orfield, Distinguished Research Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Co-Director of the Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA. Orfield’s expertise is in civil rights, education policy, urban policy, and minority opportunity. His research focus has been the impact of policy decisions on equal opportunity for success in American society. He was co-founder and director of the Harvard Civil Rights Project.

WHEN:

Thursday, October 24, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. Orfield will speak for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. A reception will follow.
