White House Drops Effort to Add Citizenship Question to the 2020 Census
Despite a last-minute attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census after the Supreme Court ruled that the rationale for doing so was “contrived,” the Trump administration, on July 11, officially dropped its efforts to put the question on the census. Read more |

Trump Executive Order Targets Federal Advisory Committees
In June, President Trump issued an executive order for agencies to cut a third of their federal advisory committees not required by law by September 30. It also restricts the creation of new committees. Read more |

OMB Issues Guidance for Agencies to Implement Evidence Act
On July 10, the White House Office of Management and Budget released guidance to federal agencies for the first year of implementation of the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act (Evidence Act). Read more |

House Passes Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act
On July 23, the House passed H.R. 36, the Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act, by a voice vote. The bipartisan bill takes important steps in supporting research and data collection to address the causes and consequences of sexual and gender harassment in STEM. Read more

House Advances Two-Year Budget Agreement to Increase Spending Caps
On July 25, the House passed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019, which includes a two-year budget agreement brokered by congressional leaders and the White House. Read more

House Science Subcommittees Hold Joint Hearing on Scientific Integrity in Federal Agencies
On July 17, the House Science Subcommittees on Research and Technology and on Investigations and Oversight held a hearing regarding issues in ensuring research integrity at federal agencies, with a focus on H.R. 1709, the Scientific Integrity Act. Read more
