Public Event to Address School Discipline April 12 in Boston
WHAT
Dr. Russell Skiba, an expert on the overuse of exclusionary discipline and the factors that contribute to racial and ethnic disparities in school discipline, will deliver a public lecture titled “School Discipline: Issues of Equity and Effectiveness,” as part of the American Educational Research Association’s Centennial Lecture Series. The event is free, open to the public, and includes an informal buffet reception.
Skiba, a Professor in the School Psychology program at Indiana University and Director of the Equity Project at Indiana University, will analyze the history and current status of school discipline reform and discuss how to best develop and maintain safe, productive, and equitable learning climates for all students.
Skiba’s 25-minute-long talk will be followed by a discussion moderated by Deborah Becker, senior correspondent and host for WBUR. Rachelle Engler Bennett, associate commissioner of student and family support at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education; William Rodriguez, assistant professor and chair of juvenile justice and youth advocacy at Wheelock College; and Matt Cregor, education project director at Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, will join Skiba and Becker during the discussion to offer comments on Skiba’s talk and join him in fielding questions from the audience.
AERA’s Centennial Lecture Series is a series of six education research lectures held across the country as part of the association’s centennial celebration.
WHO
Russell Skiba, Ph.D. is a Professor in the School Psychology program at Indiana University and Director of the Equity Project at Indiana University. His research focuses on the overuse of exclusionary discipline, and in particular factors that contribute to racial and ethnic disparities in exclusionary school discipline. He was a member of the writing team that produced the U.S. Department of Education's document on school safety Early Warning, Timely Response, and a member and lead author of the American Psychological Association’s Task Force on Zero Tolerance.
