AERA, with funding support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is now accepting applications for the AERA-MET Dissertation Fellowship Program.

IES Reauthorization Negotiations Stall

House action on the Education Sciences Reform Act — which reauthorizes the Institute of Education Sciences — came to a standstill at the beginning of December. 

Budget Compromise Restores Sequestration Research Cuts
The compromise budget deal, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, was approved by the Senate this week, sending the legislation to President Obama for his signature.


NSF Pushes for Greater Transparency and Accountability
In a December 11 letter to the leaders of universities and heads of other organizations that receive National Science Foundation research funding, NSF announced that it would be taking steps to enhance the agency’s transparency and accountability.

GAO Issues Recommendations on IES Performance in Improving Education Research
A new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office finds that the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences supports high-quality research and has made great strides in achieving its mission since it was established under the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002. 
 
NRC: New System of Assessments Needed for Next Generation Science Standards 
The National Research Council  has released a new report, Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards, that finds that implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards will require new types of assessments. 

 
OECD Releases 2012 PISA Data
The 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment findings released this month show American students lagging behind those in other developed countries, particularly in Asia, in math.
