AERA Joins Efforts to Protect NSF Peer Review

June 2012 - On May 17, on behalf of AERA and other member organizations, the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) urged the Senate not to act on a provision similar to one that recently passed the House of Representatives, prohibiting funding for the National Science Foundation’s Political Science Program.

NSF Announces REESE Call: July 17 Deadline 
The National Science Foundation has released its solicitation for the Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE) program, with a submission deadline of July 17 this year.   

NSF Seeks Proposals for Data-Intensive Research 

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced a grant program to enable the creation of new, large-scale data resources and relevant analytic techniques. The new program, Building Community and Capacity for Data-Intensive Research in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences and in Education and Human Resources (BCC-SBE/EHR), seeks proposals by May 22.

AERA Comments on NAEP Background Questions 
April 2012 - AERA has submitted comments to the National Assessments Governing Board (NAGB) on a proposal to review and revise the background questions on the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP).

AERA to File Amicus Brief 
April 2012 - AERA will file an amicus curiae brief in Fisher v. The University of Texas at Austin, a key Supreme Court case with major implications for race-conscious admissions policies in higher education. 

Education Research Service Projects 
WASHINGTON, APRIL 13, 2012– AERA has launched the Education Research Service Projects (ERSP), a new initiative to encourage education researchers to offer their pro bono expertise to educational organizations, institutions, or other community groups in areas where research can make a difference. The program seeks to connect research with education needs in local communities and to engender a culture of service. 

Tierney Assumes AERA Presidency 
April 2012 - William G. Tierney, University of Southern California (USC) professor of higher education and director of the USC Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis, initiated his term as AERA president at the close of the 2012 AERA Annual Meeting. 

AERA Honors Education Research Scholars at 93rd Annual Meeting 
WASHINGTON, April 9, 2012– Guadalupe Valdés, linguistics scholar and expert on Spanish-English bilingualism, will receive the Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Valdés is the Bonnie Katz Tenenbaum Professor of Education at Stanford University.

WASHINGTON, April 5, 2012– Education research experts will unveil findings critical to the future of education at the upcoming AERA 2012 Annual Meeting, the largest gathering of education research experts in the world. More than 13,000 participants from over 60 countries plan to attend the meeting from April 13 through 17 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Levine testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies. Her testimony supported the proposed FY 2013 budget for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR). As proposed, EHR would receive $875.6 million in FY 2013, an increase of $46.6 million, or 5.6%, over the FY 2012 appropriation.

Barbara Schneider Voted President-Elect of the American Education Research Association 
WASHINGTON, DC, March 5, 2012– Barbara Schneider, John A. Hannah Chair and University Distinguished Professor in the College of Education and Department of Sociology at Michigan State University, has been voted president-elect of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Her term as president starts at the conclusion of the 2013 Annual Meeting, after one year of service as president-elect.

2013 AERA Annual Meeting Relocates from Atlanta to San Francisco 
WASHINGTON, February 24, 2012—The 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association will be held in San Francisco, California, Saturday, April 27 through Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

U.S. Census Bureau Releases Educational Attainment Statstics Along With Other Products  
On February 23, the U.S. Census Bureau released five new education statistical products, including “Educational Attainment in the United States: 2011,” a collection of national-level tables from the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC). Also released was “Educational Attainment in the United States: 2009,” a report showing monthly employment rates by educational attainment from January 2008 to December 2010, along with other information on education from the American Community Survey (ACS), the CPS ASEC, and the monthly Current Population Survey.   

American Educational Research Association Responds to Suspension of Mexican American Studies in Tucson 
WASHINGTON, February 23, 2012—The Council of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) unanimously issued two resolutions at its February meeting in response to the suspension of the Mexican American Studies program in the Tucson Unified School District No. 1 (TUSD). The resolutions addressed specifically the suspension of such courses and urged also the repeal of Arizona HB2281, which amended the Arizona Revised Statutes Relating to School Curriculum and led to the questioning of such courses.

President Obama's Budget Requests for Education and Related Research 
On February 13, President Obama sent his budget plan to Congress. In the days following, each federal agency held briefings with interested members of the public, primarily representatives of associations, to explain and justify the requests. 
 
PCAST Report Recommends Action to Increase Number of STEM Graduates  
The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) issued a report on February 7 with five recommendations to President Obama to increase the number of STEM graduates by one million in the next decade to meet projected employment needs. These graduates would fill not only traditional STEM jobs but also “STEM-capable” jobs, or non-STEM positions that require STEM skills.  

NCES Releases Second Version of Common Education Data Standards  
On January 31, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released the second version of its Common Education Data Standards, better known as CEDS. 

STEM Education in the Federal Government: Is There Overlap Among Programs? 
Many federally funded STEM programs overlap, and few efforts are made to coordinate and evaluate program activities, according to a report released in January by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

Science and Engineering Indicators 2012 Released by National Science Board  
Last month, the National Science Board released Science and Engineering Indicators 2012, examining the state of science and engineering activities around the world. Using indicators such as number of academic degrees conferred, research published, inventions patented, and employment turnover, the report seeks to provide an understanding of trends in educational achievement, in research and development, and in state and regional economic development.
