2012 AERA Annual Meeting Tours


AERA is pleased to offer all Meeting attendees a wonderful selection of tours. Make the most of your visit to Vancouver and take one of the tours! Space is limited for these tours, and interested attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Registered participants wishing to add courses, off-site visits, or tours can log in to add events to your registration. Tours are listed below in day and time order.

TOUR1. Vancouver City Tour
Day:  Friday, April 13
Time: 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Fee: $65.00

Transportation:  Tours will depart from the convention center at the start time of the tour and return to the convention center at the end time of the tour.

 Description:

Your tour today will show you the beauty and artistic diversity of the city. The adventure begins with a drive through world famous Stanley Park, a 1,000 acre forest set in the heart of downtown. The Park's scenic drive includes Lost Lagoon, a stop at the Totem Poles, Prospect Point and Brockton Oval while providing excellent views of the city, harbor and shoreline.

The tour continues along seaside beaches to Queen Elizabeth Park to view the Sunken Gardens. Other tour highlights include exotic Chinatown, the second largest such community in North America and nearby Gastown with its quaint cobblestone streets, steam clock and unique shops all housed in turn-of-the-century buildings. This tour promises a diverse and interesting sampling of the city sights.

TOUR2. Museum of Anthropology (MOA)
Day:  Saturday, April 14
Time: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Fee: $65.00

Transportation:  Tours will depart from the convention center at the start time of the tour and return to the convention center at the end time of the tour.

The tour continues along seaside beaches to the University of British Columbia where the Museum of Anthropology sits majestically on a seaside cliff. You will be able to explore the many collections the museum has to offer as well as the museum grounds, which includes two Haida Houses, several outdoor poles, and a beautiful reflecting pool.

Granville Island features a unique collection of converted warehouses, dockside restaurants, art galleries, craftworks, several theatres, houseboats and a thriving public market specializing in epicurean delights.

The tour continues along seaside beaches to Granville Island where guests will have ample time for eating, strolling and shopping before the return trip back. Vancouver is surrounded by mountains, ocean and forest. The mild Pacific climate provides ideal conditions for fabulous garden settings. This tour is an ideal opportunity to visit some of Vancouver's most spectacular gardens,including the magnificent Rose Gardens in our world famous Stanley Park.

This is followed by a scenic drive past Vancouver's beautiful beaches to the picturesque Queen Elizabeth Park. Once an abandoned quarry, it is now a 130 acre vista of spectacular sunken gardens and decorative parkland, all over-looking the panoramic views of Vancouver and Howe Sound. TOUR5. Lynn Valley Nature Walk & Cleveland Dam

Transportation:  Tours will depart from the convention center  t the start time of the tour and return to the convention center at the end time of the tour. This is a walking tour.

One of the best ways to explore the North Shore wilderness without going far from the City is to visit one of its four fantastic canyons. This fun adventure takes the outdoor enthusiasts on an exciting tour away from the skyscrapers of the city to the skyscrapers of Mother Nature. Giant Cedars and Douglas Fir trees will greet you as you cross the spectacular Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge, offering stunning views of the Canyon below.

While walking through this breath-taking park, you will be able to watch the steam rise from the forest floor and the misty sun rays pick their way through the overhanging branches. You will learn about British Columbia's rainforest ecosystem and savour memories of an enlightening encounter with the untamed Vancouver, a once-in-the-lifetime experience not to be missed! The tour will include a stop at the Cleveland Dam before returning to the city.
