AERA Co-sponsors Hill Event to Support Funding for the National Science Foundation

On Tuesday, March 24, the American Educational Research (AERA) will co-sponsor the 15th Annual Exhibition, “The Path to Innovation:  Scientific Discovery and Learning,” along with the Coalition for National Science Funding. U.S. Senators and Representatives, as well as leaders of the National Science Foundation and Capitol Hill staffers, will attend the exhibition and reception, which is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room B338-340.

All of the research showcased at this event is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

AERA has invited William H. Schmidt, an AERA member who serves on the Michigan State University faculty, to feature his current research that is funded by the NSF’s Division of Education and Human Resources. His exhibit--Changing the Game: How Curriculum, Teachers and Parents  can work together to change mathematics and science education.

The exhibit will outline research that seeks to leverage knowledge to affect reform of the K-16 mathematics and science education system.  The need for reform in mathematics and science education is clear: students in the United States demonstrate mediocre performance on international assessments, compared with economic peers and competitors. From such studies, three areas have been identified as possible foci for leveraging reform: curriculum, the substance of schooling; teachers, the knowledge, expertise, and resources deployed in classrooms; and parents, representing the broader cultural context of schooling.

At MSU, Professor Schmidt is a University Distinguished Professor and currently co-director of the Education Policy Center, co-director of the US-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence, and co-director of the Promoting Rigorous Outcomes in Mathematics and Science Education (PROM/SE) project. His current writing and research centers on academic content in K-12 schooling, assessment theory, and the effects of curriculum on academic achievement. An elected member of the National Academy of Education, he focuses his research on education policy related to mathematics, science and testing in general.
