Professional support, school conditions, and first-year teacher attrition
Previous research has shown that the individual characteristics of elementary and secondary teachers are related to their inclination to stay or leave teaching. This study posits that their predisposition to stay or leave is mediated by the school milieu in which they work. A good school environment may mitigate their inclination to leave despite the negative influence oftheir individual circumstances. The study will use a weighted multi-level analysis to test the hypothesis that high professional support and good school conditions predispose first-year teachers to stay in teaching. A discriminant analysis will also be used to study the relative importance of different aspects of professional support and school conditions in their contribution to first-year teacher career commitment.
