Teacher satisfaction in public, private, and charter schools: The influence of workplace conditions and professionalization Ð a multilevel analysis

The 2000-2001 restricted use SASS dataset will be used to construct hierarchical linear models to determine to what degree workplace conditions and professionalization of teaching as a career can predict teacher satisfaction in public, private, and charter schools. The study will expand on the work of two previous NCES studies that were based on 1993-1994 SASS data: l) Teacher Professionalization and Teacher Commitment: A Multilevel Analysis and 2) Job Satisfaction Among America's Teachers: Effects of Workplace Conditions, Background Characteristics and Teacher Compensation. Separate models for each sector will begin with an unconditional model and background models that will be used to control for teacher and school characteristics. Additional models will begin with one of the background models and will add only one set of variables that forms one of the major constructs that are possible to manipulate by policy decisions - administrative support and leadership, resources, cooperative environment, parental support, student behavior and school atmosphere, or professionalism. Comparisons will be made to see how much new variability is explained over the background models. Finally an overall model for eadh sector will be developed.
