Comparisons across race and ethnic groups using multiple data sets
FINAL REPORT:
This research uses multiple data sets, including High School and Beyond, National Education Longitudinal Survey, National Household Education Survey, High School Effectiveness Survey, and Longitudinal Study of American Youth. The purpose of the analyses will be to identify the sources of variation with respect to values (such as school attachment, fatalism, and self esteem) and social connectedness (social capital, or embeddedness in family and other groups). There is growing evidence that variation with respect to both values and social connectedness can be traced to race and ethnic differences. In addition, if group differences are identified, individual deviations from group means will be examined, along with subgroup differences. A final step is to develop recursive models for school achievement, using structural equation models to evaluate the measurement models, with subgroup comparisons on values and social connectedness, and other exogenous variables. To illustrate, achievement orientation may be patterned differently for different race and ethnic groups, and its connection to school outcomes may, therefore, vary across groups.
