Building a foundation: Developing quality early childhood programs to enhance the science and mathematics education of all children

FINAL REPORT:

The purpose of this study was to examine what programs at the NSF are doing to promote the early cognitive development in science and mathematics of all children starting at the preschool level to ensure that they are prepared to enter the educational pipeline. As a part of this research, a set of educational guidelines for developing a sound early childhood program aimed at enhancing science and mathematics education was generated. These guidelines, based on a review of the literature and a survey of early childhood experts, were employed to evaluate current NSF projects targeting early childhood education in science and mathematics. Discussion of the results includes suggested revisions to the set of guidelines based on the comments of reviewers, an analysis of the degree to which NSF funded projects address those guidelines considered to be important to the development of a sound early childhood education in science and mathematics, and how these guidelines can be employed in the future.
