CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Plans are underway for the 2010 Division C Graduate Student Seminar, which will be held April 29 (Thursday) and April 30 (Friday) just prior to the AERA Annual Meeting in Denver. This year Akane Zusho (Fordham University) is serving as chair and Jennifer Cromley (Temple University) is serving as vice-chair.
The objective of the seminar is to provide graduate students who are members of AERA Division C with an opportunity to receive mentoring and advice from current faculty members and to begin developing professional relationships with current and future leaders within the field. The seminar is intended for full-time, advanced level doctoral students who are approaching the dissertation phase of their programs. Students who will have finished their dissertation by the end of April, 2010 should consider applying for the Division C New Faculty seminar instead.
In addition to presentations on topics such as surviving the dissertation process, and grants and funding opportunities, the seminar will consist of panel discussions on teaching, research, and publishing within the context of this year’s conference theme, “Understanding Complex Ecologies in a Changing World.” Students will also participate in a manuscript review with mentors, as well as a workshop on perfecting the vita.
Students interested in participating in the Graduate Student Seminar should submit the following by 5:00pm on Sunday, December 21, 2009. All email attachments should be sent to the chair of the seminar (zusho@fordham.edu).
- Completed online application, which can be accessed via the AERA Graduate Student Seminar Website: http://groups.google.com/group/aeragss?hl=en. You will be asked to provide the following: 1) general statement of why you are interested in attending the Division C Graduate Student Seminar and what you hope to gain from this experience, 2) demographic information, 3) abstract of dissertation study, 4) timeline for completing dissertation, 5) research interests, 6) career goals and job search timeline and, 7) preferences for mentors.
- A 2-page summary of your dissertation research.
- A vita that includes name, address, institution, telephone, fax, e-mail, educational background, awards, professional publications and presentations, teaching experience, and service activities sent directly to Seminar chair.
- A letter of recommendation from your advisor, major professor, or dissertation chair sent directly to the Seminar chair (this must be sent to us in order for your application to be considered).
Upon acceptance, participants will also be required to submit a writing sample (e.g., a manuscript to be submitted for publication) to their assigned mentor(s) at least 45 days prior to the seminar, by March 15, 2010. A limited number of participants will be selected for the 2010 Seminar based on graduate status, clarity of research interests, and match with participating mentors. Notifications will be sent out by January 30, 2010. Students who attend the seminar will receive a small stipend ($300) to help defray the expenses of travel to Denver. To be eligible, students must be members of Division C and must register for the annual meeting.
We look forward to seeing you with our Division C colleagues in Denver next April.
Division C Graduate Student Leadership
Graduate Student Co-Chairs
The graduate student co-chairs are responsible for coordinating the communication among Division C graduate students, primarily through the Campus Liaisons, newsletters, AERA business meetings, and (now) this website. Generally, the co-chairs also plan 2 special graduate student sessions at AERA – one session is generally focused on thriving in graduate school programs and the other is developed based on topics of interest.
Graduate Student Committee Representatives
The Division C Graduate Student Council (GSC) representatives primarily represent Division C graduate students within the AERA GSC, providing input and feedback in both directions. As members of the GSC, they are involved with AERA graduate initiatives throughout the year. They also plan the Division C Fireside Chat each year at AERA.
