Call for Volunteers

Hello Her's,

We had a large number of submissions for our Outstanding Publications Competition and need more judges. If you are interested or have questions please contact the Committee Chair, David Laird Holdzkom at dholdzkom@wcpss.net, or the assistant Chair Cartwright, Vickie L. at vickie.cartwright@ocps.net

Will you have an hour or two in Denver to meet a like-minded researcher? We are looking for Mentors and Graduate Students interested in spending an hour over coffee as part of  our new Coffee Mentorship opportunity in Denver.
Find out more at http://www.aera.net/divisions/Default.aspx?menu_id=94&id=9022

A more long-term opportunity is available in the Division H Early Career Mentorship program available for students  finishing their  graduate program in June 2010 or who are in the first three years following their graduate programs. This unique mentorship program pairs the young professional with an experienced person in an applied field related to Division H’s purpose – Research, Evaluation and Assessment in Schools. As the intent of the mentorships is to  support the transition from academia to an applied setting, applications should emphasize the applied nature of the mentor’s experience and a new professional relationship. Support in finding a mentor is available if needed.

Please visit http://aera.net/divisions/Default.aspx?menu_id=94&id=9024 for more information about the program and the  application process as well as the testimonials of the previously awarded mentees regarding their experience..

Call for Nominations - Division H Vice President 2011-2013

I am writing to let you know that AERA Division H, will be electing a Vice President-Elect during AERA's 2010 General Election.  As you know, Division VP's serve a two-year term with the current Division H VP term ending at the conclusion of the 2011 Annual Meeting.  Thus, a VP-Elect will need to be elected in 2010 so that the elected person will have one year to become familiarized with the operations of Division H and the role of VP.   The newly elected VP will serve from the end of the 2011 conference to the end of the 2013 conference, a three year term.

If you would like to nominate yourself or another Division H member, please email the Nominations Committee Chair, Steve Henry, by August 10th including information on the roles served by the nominee in the Division and/or AERA, and a short vita or other background information statement.

Must-see interview with former AERA President David Berliner

Arizona State University produced this interview with David Berliner that provides an inside, intimate portrait of an educational psychologist whose career is truly noteworthy.  In short, the show highlights how David came to be the person and educational researcher he is, his lifetime accomplishments in the field, his insightful responses to a series of philosophical questions, and some of his words of wisdom.

Submission Deadline Extended
The submission deadline for the 2010 Annual Meeting has been extended to July 22!  The AERA Online Submission System is still open at https://www.aera.net/AALogin.aspx?ReturnURL=/WS/UpdateAA.aspx.

Expert Review Panels
This year three experts and a graduate student will review every paper. Each reviewer will be asked to review 10 to 15 papers.
The reviews will take place from August 15-September 15.  Selection to serve as a panelist is an academic honor. Those chosen will be publicly acknowledged by AERA and will be recognized and honored at the Division H
Breakfast.

Selection criteria will be experience in peer reviewing; service on other professional review panels; knowledge of the field; and scholarly productivity and research expertise. When you register as a reviewer, please
be sure to complete the online background information carefully. The quality of the Division H Annual Meeting Program depends greatly on the quality of reviewers. Login at

Program Change
T
he 2010 program will emphasize the use of two formats: structured poster sessions and working group round tables. Both formats are to encourage more discussion and interplay between researchers and less lecturing.

Structured posters are presentations and discussions of no more than 10 papers on a common theme or issue.  Authors will have an opportunity to makes a brief presentation to the full audience.  The audience is then
invited to visit the posters and discuss the research one-on-one with the author. Following this, the discussant will comment to the full group on the research and invite the audience to ask questions or provide comments. As
you can imagine the posters will guide the conversation and not be pages of a paper glued to a poster board.

Working Group Round Tables will include four or five papers and a moderator.  Participants will discuss a challenging or interesting issue around a common topic area. The moderator will engage the audience in discussion.  This format is particularly suited to candid discussions of cutting edge issues or challenges and provides opportunities for researchers to share and develop new methodologies. Unlike a traditional paper presentation, this format allows for more interchange and idea development.

When you are submitting papers, please indicate your interest in submitting any format that would interest you. Login at https://www.aera.net/AALogin.aspx?ReturnURL=/WS/UpdateAA.aspx

Remember that session allocation is based on number of submissions rather than absolute numbers of the division, so please submit your work. The call for papers and expert reviewers is available on the AERA home page: http://www.aera.net

Thanks!
