Summer 2010 Message from the Vice President

I want to take this opportunity to thank Linda Cook for her outstanding service as vice president of Division D for the last three years. Her accomplishments are many.

With Linda’s leadership, bylaws were adopted and a handbook was written to guide elected leadership and committee members. Both are available on the Division D Web site. Working with the Graduate Student Committee, she supported the development of the Graduate Student in Progress Research Gala and the funding of one-time travel awards of $1,000 for each of ten graduate students to attend the conference in 2010. She worked with NCME to co-sponsor a reception with AERA Division D. She initiated pairing the business meeting with a luncheon, and attendance has been very good the last two years. She helped bring two important ideas to reality with the formation of the Inter-national Committee and the inauguration of the AERA Under-graduate Student Education Research Training Workshop. And under her guidance the Robert L. Linn Distinguished Address Award was created. Her hard work in support of the countless hours members gave to Division D has clearly strengthened the organization.

All of the Division D committee chairs are appointed, and all but one of the committees are fully staffed. Terran Brown will serve as the overall chair and as chair of the educational measurement, psychometrics, and assessment section for the Division D 2011 Annual Meeting Program. Mary Pitoniak will serve as co-chair of that section. Jill Adelson will serve as chair of the quantitative methods and statistical theory section, with Laura Stapleton as co-chair. Ryan Gildersleeve will serve as chair of the qualitative research methods section, with Penny Pasque as co-chair. Their work on the 2011 program began before the 2010 annual meeting was held, with the circulation of re-quests for proposal reviewers and the creation of review panels. I want to thank those of you who have signed up to review proposals for the 2011 annual meeting. We need not only good reviewers but also session chairs and discussants. Please consider volunteering for these important roles.

I am looking forward to working with Cindy Walker, secretary and newsletter editor, and I congratulate Gary Cook, who will assume that position at the conclusion of the 2011 annual meeting.

I hope we can achieve a closer working relationship with NCME this year. The program committees for Division D and NCME have discussed using invited sessions to expand program offerings across the two organizations by reducing duplication.

Other agenda items include the creation of a new early career award, assessment of review panels, the distribution of the new Division D brochure, and earlier constitution of the Division D committees. We will be asking for volunteers in early fall so that all the 2012 committees will be fully staffed before the holidays. I encourage you to volunteer.

I am looking forward to serving you during the next two years as vice president for Division D. I am eager to hear your suggestions for promoting and enhancing the division.
