How do I submit my research to an AERA journal?

AERA Open
American Educational Research Journal
Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis
Educational Researcher
Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics
Review of Educational Research

All manuscripts must be submitted through our online submission platform, ScholarOne. We do not accept submissions via e-mail.

All of our journals abide by a double-blind review policy; once your manuscript is received, it will first be read by the editors to determine whether it merits being sent out for review to a panel of blind reviewers.

There is no charge for publishing in any of our journals except AERA Open. (AERA Open is our open access journal. Upon acceptance of their manuscripts, authors are charged a one-time fee to cover the cost of publishing).

How do I change my journal mailing preferences?

Log into your AERA account, click “My AERA” at the top of the page, and click “Mailings Destination” under “My Profile.” Please contact the AERA Membership Department at members@aera.net with any questions.

How can I become a reviewer for AERA’s journals?

In order to become a reviewer, you must create an account through our manuscript submission site, ScholarOne. As part of the registration process, you'll be prompted to choose keywords that relate to your areas of expertise, and manuscripts with corresponding tags will be assigned to you accordingly at the editor(s)’ discretion. Please choose the journal(s) for which you would like to review and create an account in our system. (If you choose to become a reviewer for more than one journal, you will need to create separate accounts. If you choose to review for only one journal now, you may still create additional accounts for other journals in the future.)

If you are not familiar with our journals, you can read about their contents/scope here. Links to ScholarOne account creation can be accessed here.

Can I access AERA journals in JSTOR?

Journals in JSTOR have "moving walls" that define the time lag between the most current issue published and the content available in JSTOR. AERA journals have a three-year moving wall that shifts each January when new issues are posted.

AERA offers online access to the AERA journal archive through JSTOR for $40/year. Members can also save $100 on a subscription to JPASS. These rates are available through the "Special Offers" section of the My AERA portal.

How do I request a desk or exam copy?

To request a desk or exam copy of an AERA publication for classroom use, please complete the online request form. Orders are processed weekly.

How do I purchase an eBook? What is the online reading format?

eBooks are available through AERA’s eBook website, ebooks.aera.net. Discounts are available for AERA members; coupon codes are listed in the "My AERA" member portal on the main AERA website (www.aera.net).

Please note: You do not need to log into the ebooks.aera.net site with your AERA membership information before making a purchase on the eBooks website. Because the eBooks website is a separate site, an account will be created for you during checkout with credentials that differ from your AERA membership username/password.

The single-user online eBook format allows immediate access to your content anywhere, anytime, and on all of your favorite devices, with no software to download. The browser-based eReader allows immediate access to your eBook on Internet-enabled devices including tablets, smartphones, desktop computers, and laptops. You can also access your eBook offline. The online eBook format includes a linked table of contents and bookmarking; in-text and marginal note-taking features; a highlighter for text, graphs, and images; a keyword search tool; a note and bookmark organizer; a pen tool; a built-in dictionary; flashcard and personalized study guide creation; and collaboration and note sharing options. For more information, please see the eBook FAQ page.

Additional Information:

  • eBooks are for single-users only, and are not currently available for institutional access through ebooks.aera.net. • Print only and print/eBook bundle orders are fulfilled through the AERA Bookstore. After a bundle is purchased, you will receive an email from AERA that includes a link to the eBook sales platform and a coupon for free access.  AERA Online Paper Repository

How can I access past conference papers?

AERA’s Online Paper Repository is an open access clearinghouse, with abstracts, of scientific presentations given at AERA annual meetings since 2010. More than half include full-text papers voluntarily contributed to the repository by annual meeting presenters. AERA encourages all presenters to make their full-text papers available in the repository as a way to distribute their research more broadly. AERA does not publish conference proceedings.

Can I submit a paper I presented at the Annual Meeting to a journal for publication consideration?

Authors retain full copyright of their work when uploading a conference paper to AERA’s Online Repository, so they are free to submit it to journals for publication consideration after the annual meeting. If your paper is accepted for publication, you may add the appropriate doi, ISBN, or page numbers to your entry in AERA's Online Paper Repository for a more accurate citation (if the journal in which your work is published allows you to keep a copy of your paper in our repository). If the journal does not allow you to keep a copy of your paper in our repository after it is published, you may have it removed from the repository by contacting our Meetings department at annualmtg@aera.net.
Can I post a paper I presented at the Annual Meeting to my institution’s repository?

Authors retain full copyright of papers presented at AERA Annual Meetings and/or uploaded to AERA’s Online Repository unless they are published in a book or journal at a later date. If your conference papers have not been published elsewhere, you are free to upload them into your institutional repository. If they have been published since the Annual Meeting, please contact the publisher for permission.
