AERA’s Book Publications Program

In June 2004, AERA Council adopted a new policy to guide the AERA’s book publications program. While heretofore the Association had published occasional books and monographs, the new policy reflects an intentional commitment to serve as a publisher of books of excellence and importance to the education research community and to practitioners and policymakers interested in education research. The aim of the book publications program is to publish works that advance knowledge, expand access to significant research and research analyses and syntheses, and promote knowledge utilization.

Along with the new policy, Council approved a Handbook Series in Education Research to be published in partnership with Lawrence Erlbaum and Associates, now Routledge, part of the Taylor and Francis Group. A newly established Books Editorial Board has responsibility for implementing the Handbook Series as one component of a larger plan. The Board also has responsibility for reviewing and making decisions about book products emanating from AERA activities, journals, projects, or programs. In addition, during this year, the Books Editorial Board will be developing other aspects of a book publications program for review by the AERA Council.

Cherry A. Banks, University of Washington, Bothell, chairs the Books Editorial Board. Other Editorial Board Members include Gilberto Q. Conchas, University of California, Irvine; Robert E. Floden, Michigan State University; Mary M. Juzwik, Michigan State University; Felice J. Levine, American Educational Research Association; Gary Natriello, Columbia University; Mariana Souto-Manning, Teachers College, Columbia University; and Carol Camp Yeakey, Washington University, St. Louis.
