Robert Kelchen is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Seton Hall University, where he teaches graduate students in the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy. His research focuses on how students and colleges respond to federal and state policies in higher education.

Some of his ongoing and recent projects include how colleges have reacted to new state performance-based funding policies, the implications of state policies penalizing students for taking more credits than necessary to finish their degrees, and whether law schools responded to increased federal student loan limits by raising their tuition. His first book, Higher Education Accountability, is scheduled to be released in January 2018 by Johns Hopkins University Press.

As an untenured faculty member, Dr. Kelchen has worked to connect his scholarly research to policymakers and the general public. In addition to writing articles for academic journals and being the data editor for Washington Monthly magazine’s annual college guide and rankings, he regularly writes for venues such as The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Conversation, and Politico. He is frequently quoted by media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post and has appeared on CNBC, MSNBC, and PBS. He can often be found traveling the country to meet with federal and state policymakers as well as college access organizations. He uses his Twitter account to engage with a broader community—and occasionally to show the lighter side of academic life.

Reach out to Dr. Kelchen on Twitter to say THANK YOU for the education research that he does! And be sure to use the hashtag #ThankAScientist.
