On June 9, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released an advance copy of the report,
The Value of Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences to National Priorities: A Report for the National Science Foundation.

“The report is bold and captures what the broad scientific community has been saying for a while, that social, behavioral, and economic sciences make significant contributions to the National Science Foundation’s mission to advance health, prosperity and welfare, national defense, and progress in science “ said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. The report provides specific scenarios of how NSF SBE-funded research has provided important knowledge in each of these areas.

Furthermore, the report concludes that the SBE sciences provide “understanding, tools, and methods” that help not only NSF but also other agencies achieve their missions and furthermore have been applicable to business and industry.

The Appropriations Subcommittee staff majority and minority have been briefed on the report. AERA has been actively sharing the report with members of Congress who serve on committees with jurisdiction over NSF.
