H. Richard Milner IV, a leading scholar of urban education and teacher education at the University of Pittsburgh, has been selected by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) to present the 2018 Brown Lecture in Education Research. The public lecture will take place on Thursday, October 25, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

At the University of Pittsburgh, Milner is the Helen Faison Endowed Chair of Urban Education, Professor of Education, and Director of the Center for Urban Education. He is also an AERA Fellow.

“Dr. Milner has significantly advanced our understanding of urban education and teacher education related to diversity and equity,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “His groundbreaking work on practices and policies that support teacher success in urban schools is a perfect match for the goals of the Brown Lecture.”

The Annual Brown Lecture in Education Research illuminates the important role of research in advancing understanding of equality and equity in education.

Milner’s research, teaching, and policy interests concern urban education, teacher education, African American literature, and the social context of education. His work has appeared in numerous journals, and he has published five books. He is editor-in-chief of Urban Education and co-editor of the Handbook of Urban Education

The Brown Lecture Selection Committee included AERA President Deborah Loewenberg Ball (University of Michigan), AERA President-elect Amy Stuart Wells (Teachers College, Columbia University), AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine, AERA Director of Professional Development and Diversity Officer George L. Wimberly, Tabbye Chavous (University of Michigan), Michelle Knight-Manuel (Teachers College, Columbia University), and Daniel Losen (University of California, Los Angeles).

Now in its 15th year, the Brown Lecture was inaugurated by AERA in 2004 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, in which the U.S. Supreme Court took scientific research into account in issuing its landmark ruling.
