In my early academic career, I was attracted to AERA for precisely the reason that seems to deter others. The volume of presentations, the broad range of expertise, the sheer size of AERA was never off-putting to me. This broad and comprehensive collection of educational scholarship enabled me to seek out the intellectual diversity that could inspire and advance my own scholarly deliberations.

At AERA, I sought out various intellectual communities, knowing that these scholars could stimulate and encourage my thinking about the many complex ways in which gender, race and ethnicity are constructs central to American higher education. I found in AERA colleagues across Divisions and SIGs who challenged my thinking on these very constructs, and who supported my theoretical work, not just my empirical projects. The mentoring relationships I was privileged to build with senior scholars shaped my professional dispositions and have steered my decades-long contributions to the Association. AERA is an opportunity to think, discover and explore beyond the boundaries of your particular sub-field; it is an opportunity to inform your ideas with scholarship that’s beyond your ken.
