June 2014

While the Senate was expected to debate and vote on a set of appropriations bills for FY 2015 that includes funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF), during the week of June 16, the “minibus” stalled on June 19 as senators objected over the process of voting on amendments. The Senate Appropriations Committee had voted unanimously to advance the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) FY 2015 appropriations bill on June 5.

The Senate bill would provide $7.25 billion for NSF, which matches President Obama’s budget request for the agency. This amount is less than the amount included in the House Appropriations bill that was approved in May. A comparison of the proposed appropriations bills with the President’s budget and prior years is detailed below.

AERA mobilized efforts to defeat potential harmful amendments to the bill, including one similar to the Coburn amendment that cut funding and placed constraints on political science research in the FY 2013 omnibus appropriations bill. Whether the Senate will take further action on the bill is unknown at this time.
