AERA Symposium on the Educational Benefits of Diversity

On April 16, 2012, AERA held a symposium at its 2012 Annual Meeting focusing on research that highlights the benefits of diversity in educational settings. The symposium was moderateed by Felice J. Levine, AERA executive director. The presenters discussed how the research shaped the Supreme Court decision in Grutter v. Bollinger and how it should shape the arguments to be presented to the Court in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. Both cases bear on the use of race-conscious admissions policies in higher education. The symposium featured Gary Orfield, UCLA Civil Rights Project; Chandra Muller, University of Texas at Austin; Nancy Cantor, Syracuse University; and William Trent, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
