The AERA Graduate Student Council (GSC) is pleased to publicly announce the launch of its YouTube initiative. This initiative aims to use technology to broaden the dissemination and influence the way the GSC communicates with its constituents. The first video is now live and outlines pertinent information for Graduate Students who will be submitting a proposal for the first time. Subsequent videos will be released outlining what the GSC does for Graduate Students, as well as a host of other helpful topics for Graduate Students. If you have topics and/or information that you would like to see in future videos, please e-mail Cathy Rosenberg, GSC Chair (cathy.rosenberg@gmail.com). We hope that you will have time to view the first video while you are crafting your proposal(s) for the 2013 AERA Annual Meeting to be held in San Francisco, CA. See you in ther!

2011 New Orleans Service Project
The Community Service Project sponsored by the Graduate Student Council in partnership with the New Orleans Area
Habitat for Humanity was an overwhelming success with graduate students and their friends and family members. Volunteers arrived a day early for the 2011 annual meeting in New Orleans, to engage with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) program in their effort to provide homes for families who experienced the devastating effects of hurricane Katrina. This energetic group of volunteers collectively provided over 230 hours of labor as they worked on two Habitat houses being built in the hard hit lower 9 ward. In addition, this group also donated $500 to NOAHH to help defray the cost of materials and supplies. Several participants commented that this event renewed their spirits and provided a useful lens to think more deeply about the 2011 theme Inciting the Social Imagination: Education Research for the Public Good. We all agreed this year’s event was an overwhelming success on many levels and well-worth repeating in Vancouver. A special thank you goes out to the following Community Service Project coordinators and organizing committee members: Robin Harris, Patrick Bell, John Wolcott, and Robyn Carlson.

AERA GSC 2012 Community Service Project
In response to this year’s conference theme, Non Satis Scire: To Know Is Not Enough, the AREA GSC is partnering with the SAME (Surrey Appreciates ME) Project to paint a community mural that is designed by Surrey School District 36 students and master muralist Michelle Loughery. This project will encapsulate the mission of the SAME project—to engage youth as mentor-leaders in community contexts while emphasizing anti-racism, belonging, diversity and inclusion. It will provide AERA participants a significant opportunity to have informal conversations with high school students from the Vancouver area’s largest school district. Such conversations may provide AERA participants deeper insight into the Surrey and Vancouver contexts and allow students to contribute and take significant pride in their community while working alongside AERA participants to provide a lasting legacy to the City of Surrey. Master muralist Michelle Loughery notes, “Public Art enhances the quality of life of a community by helping to define and formulate responses to social, economic, cultural and political issues faced by a community. Public Art contributes to cross-cultural understanding, and a sense of ownership and responsibility towards one's community. In its broadest definition, Public Art inspires community understanding, pride and creativity, and benefits the health and development of individual and community life. At its best, Public Art is more than simply art integrated, installed or performed in a public place; rather it is a community-based process of dialogue, involvement, and participation.”
Please note: While no prior experience with painting is required, AERA members registering for this year’s GSC community service project should be willing to partner with one of the participating high school students and engage in email communication with the student prior to the mural painting community service day. Participants will meet and work alongside their student partners during the CSP day.
How It Works
Students interested in becoming liaisons will be asked to forward the GSC community leader and coordinator, Angela Hines (ahines@asu.edu) the following information:
Once the volunteer’s name and e-mail address is registered into the liaisons database, they will receive periodic e-mails containing relevant information pertaining to graduate students’ professional, academic and psychological development. Once the e-mail is received, each liaison will be asked to disseminate the information in appropriate arenas while using the most effective method of circulation (e.g., flyer, listservs).
The Commitment
Liaisons may volunteer for any period of time during their pursuit of a graduate degree. However, in an attempt to decrease the effects of a high turnover rate, each volunteer will be asked to appoint (recruit) another student to fill the vacated position.
The Roles and Responsibilities
The roles and responsibilities of serving as a liaison include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primary Tasks: · Assist in GSC’s efforts to increase graduate student awareness of both AERA and GSC; · Disseminate information that is germane to the plight and progress of graduate students in e-mail or the most appropriate format; · Post flyers informing graduate students of AERA division related activities at the upcoming AERA meeting (Provided by the division graduate student representatives). Secondary Tasks (Optional): · Serve as a host in the GSC’s hospitality suite during the annual AERA meeting; · Give presentations to your department highlighting AERA division activities and objectives.
